Microblading has taken the world by storm by making the eyebrows look sculpted and defined with fine, precisely tattooed hairstrokes. While the effects of microblading does gradually fade over time just as with any cosmetic tattoo, how long it lasts varies depending upon a multitude of factors. Here are a few questions that you may be asking if you’re wondering how long the results of microbladed eyebrows will last:
The Basics
The most common claim from the vast majority of microblading technicians is for the results to last anywhere from 1 to 3 years. Depending on the individual skin as well as the client’s personal preference however, the degree of fading that occurs at any time may necessitate that client get a touch up to refreshen up the color that will have a tendency to lighten and dull over time, just like with permanent hair color. By getting touch-ups every time you start to notice the color fading, you can easily maintain fuller and darker-looking brows. Without a touch up the brows should still retain its shape well even over an extended period of time and make it easy to fill in with regular eyebrow makeup if desired. If it’s been well over several years since your last color boost and you did not have much brows to begin with, then your technician may have to start the procedure again almost from scratch with at least one follow up procedure performed ideally within 6 weeks. For many clients an annual touchup to freshen up the brows is always welcome and not unreasonably difficult nor expensive to maintain.
What if I have oily skin?
Despite any misconceptions that oily skin is contraindicated for microblading because the excess sebum may make it difficult for the pigment to stay in the skin, the fact is that any skin that is healthy enough to be tattooed can be microbladed. While it’s true that the results may not last as long for some people because their skin may be quite oily, it is also true that oily, thick, sebaceous skin in other people does not have any affect on the longevity of their microbladed eyebrows. I have had clients with thick sebaceous skin whose eyebrows look virtually unchanged even more than a year after their procedure. Always speak to your technician about your concerns. If your oily skin is likely to be a factor in the results of your microblading, you may need a different schedule for touch-ups to ensure successful color rentention. Make sure you know when you will need to come back.
How long does it take to heal?
Your microbladed brows should take anywhere from 5 to 7 days – give or take a day or so – for the skin to heal completely. During this time, your skin may feel sensitive and tender for the first couple of days. A fresh, micro bladed tattoo will also look darker and more intense before lightening and receding into a softened, well-shaped yet natural-looking version of your previous eyebrows. It’s best to allow 3 to 4 weeks for the pigment to fully settle into the skin before making any further enhancements with microblading.
How do I take care of my skin afterward?
Once your skin is completely healed, you are free to go back to wearing makeup, if desired, and sunscreen if needed. Keep taking care of your skin the way you normally do. A regular skin care routine is important for the health of your skin, and nice skin will only serve to compliment your brows well.
How long will the results last?
The amount of ink used in microblading each stroke of hair into the skin plays a significant role in how long the results will last. The typical 2 to 3 sessions in a microblading procedure should produce results that look good for at least a year, providing that precautions are taken to keep the skin protected from excessive UV exposure and strong exfoliating agents. Microblading offers a more natural look for eyebrows that is not permanent for life and requires infrequent touch ups for upkeep but tends to age better in the long run. This may cost more than a one time eyebrow tattoo, but you will have better control and more flexibility in making any changes to your eyebrows with microblading.
