Is permanent makeup safe and how is it regulated?
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), any form of tattooing including permanent makeup is considered safe when the technician is educated in the control of Blood Borne Pathogens and follows all OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) guidelines.
However, permanent makeup not licensed or regulated in most states including California. In such states, the best assurance of safety is a permit issued by the county health department.
A permit is issued only when the place of business and its equipment are examined and approved by a health department inspector. San Francisco is a regulated county where inspections occur. In non-regulated counties, there are no inspections of anyone performing permanent cosmetics so it’s buyer beware.
